Monoalkylation of methyl ketones

Methyl ketones of formula: (where r1-3 are organic radicals) are monoalkylated on the methyl gp. by dissolving an Li enolate of the ketone in a solvent and reacting this with RX (where R is an organic radical attached via a C atom; and X is a radical which will combine to form LiX). Pref. R1, R2 and the C atom form a cyclopropyl ring.
