PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to efficiently produce a hydrophobic adsorbent which has excellent durability. which enables efficient recovery of hydrophobic reagents and hydrophobic proteins with a small amt. of an org. solvent, and moreover, which shows excellent separation characteristics and produces sharp separation peaks when it is used as a filler for reversed-phase chromatography. SOLUTION: In this producing method of a hydrophobic adsorbent, an aliphatic monovalent alcohol or phenol having 4 to 20 carbon atoms is reacted to halogens or glycidyl groups in a granular polymer having halogens or glycidyl groups and having 0.5 to 17.0 (cal/cm3)1/2 solubility parameter. Or, the hydrophobic adsorbent is produced by reacting an aliphatic monovalent alkyl halide having 4 to 20 carbon atoms with hydroxyl groups or glycidyl groups in a granular polymer having hydroxyl groups or glycidyl groups and having 10.5 to 17.0 (cal/cm3)1/2 solubility parameter.
