The upper part (5) of the ship's mast structure (5) is constructed from thin aluminum plates (6, 7) which provide protection to a cavity (8). The cavity provides an elevated position for phased array antennae and other sensors which provide meteorological data signals. The cavity is bounded by vertical inner support bulkheads (10).
