PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reconcile the startability by a glow plug and an exhaust performance in a Diesel engine. SOLUTION: A reentrant type cavity combustion chamber 5 is recessed in the center part of the top surface of a piston 1. On the cylinder head 2 side, a fuel injection nozzle 6 having five nozzle holes is vertically arranged at the center position of the cylinder 4 corresponding to the center of the cavity combustion chamber 5. The nozzle holes are formed at equal intervals, and are inclined at equal angle to the center axis of the cylinder 4. The spray angles of the nozzle holes are in a range from 10 to 20 deg. The front end of the glow plug 9 is located at an angle of 10 to 20 deg. with respect the center axis L of the one of the nozzle holes, which is nearest thereto, in the swirl upstream side, circumferentially of the cylinder 4, and is located at a position where it is tangential to the center axis L in the axial direction of the cylinder 4.
