PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image having a high dynamic range and improved contrast with a small circuit scale and a small arithmetic operation quantity by setting a representative area in the image, obtaining a gradation conversion table according to a gradation luminance distribution of pixels near the edge of the image in the representative area, and performing gradation conversion which is different by pixels by making use of the gradation conversion table. SOLUTION: A gradation converting circuit 1 converts luminance level according to a local luminance frequency near the edge and the coordinate values of a pixel. An optical illusion waveform generating circuit 2 generates a waveform generating optical illusion of luminance level. The output of the optical illusion waveform generating circuit 2 is superposed on the output of the gradation converting circuit 1, and the result is outputted as output luminance. Consequently, the luminance is so converted that the luminance level of the image varies greatly near the edge and the waveform, which generates the optical illusion of luminance level is superposed thereupon so as to improve the contrast of an image which is displayed on a display device. |
