The tramway has an electrically powered tram (12) running on rails (10), with supply delivered through the rails (14,15). One of the rails is subdivided into sections electrically insulated from each other and with a length less than the length of the tram. A switching unit (24) controls activation of each section of rail, ensuring that a section is live only when the tram covers that section.
