PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst having excellent olefin polymerization activity by using a transition metal imine compound, a boron-containing organoaluminumoxy compound or clay, a clay mineral, or an ion exchange layered compound, and, optionally, an organometallic compound. SOLUTION: A transition metal imine compound of formula I and a boron- containing organoaluminumoxy compound of formula II are used. In the formulae, M is a group 8-11 transition metal atom; R1 to R4 are each H, a halogen, a halohydrocarbon group, a hydrocarbon group, a heterocyclic compound residue, an oxygen-containing group, a nitrogen-containing group, a boron-containing group, a sulfur-containing group, a phosphorus-containing group, a silicon- containing group, a germanium-containing group, a tin-containing group, or two adjoining groups of them may be combined with each other to form a ring; n is the valence of M; X is H, a halogen, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, a 1-20C halohydrocarbon group, an oxygen-containing group, a sulfur-containing group, or a silicon-containing group; Y is a group 15 or 16 atom; R31 is a 1-10C hydrocarbon group; and R32 is H, a halogen, or a 1-10C hydrocarbon group.
