PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the recognition accuracy of a traffic sign in a traffic sign recognizing device for recognizing a traffic sign by an on-vehicle camera during the running of a vehicle. SOLUTION: A prescribed range in the front of a vehicle 1 is photographed by an on-vehicle camera 2 loaded on the vehicle 1 moving at a speed (v) after the lapse of timeΔT to obtain two image. An object having the possibility of a traffic sign is extracted from the shapes and image sizes of the two images and the image size of the corresponding object is measured. Then a distance up to the object and the size of the object are found out from a change in the image size of the corresponding object and the running distance of the vehicle 1. Only an object having the same size as a traffic sign and separated from the vehicle 1 by a proper distance is selected. A pattern recognizing device judges whether the selected object is a traffic sign or not, and when the object is the traffic sign, judges the sort of the traffic sign. Since a traffic sign is extracted from two images photographed on respectively different positions, a far signboard or the moon is not misrecognized as a traffic sign.
