PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the starting method of a shield machine, in which the shield-machine mounting space of a starting shaft may not be expanded even when the shield machine having a long-sized machine length is started. SOLUTION: In the starting method of the shield machine, the shield machine is installed into a starting shaft 2 under the state, in which a tail plate 6 is detached, and propelled by a shield jack 4 while taking reaction by a reaction- receiving stand 11 as a first process. The above-mentioned shield machine is propelled at a specified distance, a corbel 12 is interposed between the shield jack 4 and the reaction-receiving stand 11, and the above-mentioned shield machine is propelled by the shield jack 4 again as a second process. The above- mentioned shield machine is propelled at a fixed distance and a space, in which the tail plate 6 can be installed, is ensured at the rear of the above-mentioned shield machine, and the detached tail plate 6 is mounted in the space at the rear of the shield machine 3 and combined with the above-mentioned shield machine by welding as a third process. The above-mentioned shield machine is started through the first or third processes.
