PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the generation of a contact noise hard to occur and to make it possible to obtain a sufficient reproduction output by forming the portion between a pair of shielding materials where a magnetoresistive element out of a magnetic tape sliding surface is formed as a recessed part. SOLUTION: A pair of the shielding materials 61, 62 are composed of a material having the hardness higher than the hardness of the magnetoresistive element 64. The portion of the magnetic tape sliding surface 68 of a magnetoresistive type magnetic head 6 where the magnetoresistive element 64 is formed between a pair of the shielding materials 61 and 62 is formed as the recessed part of 4 to 30 nm in depth t1. The portion, where the magnetoresistive element 64 is formed, is formed as the recessed part in such a manner, to form some spacing between the magnetoresistive element 64 and the magnetic tape even if the magnetoresistive type magnetic head 6 is slid with the magnetic tape at the time of reproducing the signal recorded on the magnetic tape. The generation of the contact noise by the contact of the magnetoresistive element 64 with the magnetic tape can be avoided.
