PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a low fractional mol.wt. by producing a polyamide-imide separation membrane using ethanol or an aq. soln. contg. a specified wt.% or more of ethanol as a solidifying liq. when a membrane is formed using a membrane forming stock soln. consisting of a polyamide-imide and a good solvent for the polyamide-imide. SOLUTION: When a membrane is formed using a membrane forming stock soln. consisting of a polyamide-imide and an org. solvent such as dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, diethylformamide, diethylacetamide, N-methylpyrrolidone, morpholine or dioxane as a good solvent for the polyamide-imide, the stock soln. is spread on a glass substrate at room temp., air-dried and solidified by immersing in ethanol or an aq. soln. contg. >=50 wt.% ethanol to produce the objective polyamide-imide separation membrane having about 75μm thickness. This membrane maintains a low fractional mol.wt. and has enhanced water permeability.
