PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treating method of a photosensitive material with high sensitivity and decreased irregular development and improved silver tone. SOLUTION: A silver halide photosensitive material having hydrophilic colloid layers (including silver halide emulsion layers) is used for development. The silver halide photosensitive material has the following properties. (1) The material has at least one photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer containing silver halide particles having <=2 mol.% AgI average content, and has hydrophilic colloid layers containing a compd. expressed by the formula of R-S-M or its thionic compd. In the formula, R is an aliphatic group, aromatic group. heterocyclic group or alicyclic group substituted with water soluble groups, and M is a hydrogen atom, alkali metal atom or cation. (2) The hydrophilic colloid layers contain a carboxyl active type film hardening agent, and contains a compd. expressed by the formula above described or its thionic compd. A developer containing reductone is used in the developing process.
