PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone set equipped with an illuminator capable of prolonging the service life of a battery by suppressing current consumption without cost-up or mounting area expansion. SOLUTION: This portable telephone set is equipped with an operation means 1 provided on the body of the portable telephone set so as to be used for a prescribed input operation, illumination means 5 for illuminating this operation means, detection means for detecting the operation of the operation means, timer means 4 to be started by the detecting signal of this detection means, control means for stopping the illumination means 5 on the condition that the time measurement data of this timer means exceed a prescribed value, time measuring means 3 for measuring time, and limitation means 2 for limiting the operation of the illumination means only in a prescribed time zone corresponding to the measured result of this time measuring means.
