PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method of manufacturing an alloy powder or an intermetallic compound using a reduction-diffusion process and to provide a manufacturing method capable of stably giving a constant quality. SOLUTION: Ca as a reducing agent is mixed with an oxide-containing raw material, heating is applied to perform reduction and diffusion, and then water washing and acid treatment are carried out to form an R-T or R-T-X alloy powder, by which a rare earth-transition metal alloy powder is manufactured. This method of manufacturing the rare earth-transition metal alloy powder comprises a stage where, after water washing is performed at <=40 deg.C until the Ca concentration of a washing mother liquor reaches <=50 ppm. treatment with a carboxylic acid of 0.01 to 1 vol.% concentration is performed. At this time, R is rare earth elements including Y, T is at least one transition metal element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co, and Ni, and X is at least one element selected from the group consisting of N, B, and C.
