PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and highly selectively obtain a 4-cyanobenzene derivative useful as a p-type liquid crystal material at a low cost from an easily available raw material or intermediate by reacting a specific oxazoline derivative with an acidic dehydrating agent. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 4-cyanobenzene derivative of formula II [for example, 4-(4-propylcyclohexyl)-4'-cyanobiphenyl] comprises reacting an oxazoline derivative of formula I [R is a 1-20C alkyl capable of being substituted by a 1-7C alkoxyl group or the like; ring A is 1,4-phenylene capable of being substituted by fluorine or the like; ring B is 1,4-phenylene capable of substituted by fluorine or the like; L is CH2CH2 or the like; (m) is 0 or 1; Xa and Xb are each H or fluorine; Ra-Rd are each H or a 1-5C alkyl] for example, 2-[4-[4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)phenyl]phenyl]-4,4-dimethyl-1,3- oxazoline} with an acidic dehydrating agent (preferably phosphorus oxychloride) in a solvent such as pyridine preferably under heating.
