PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a camera compact. SOLUTION: This variable power position detecting device is constituted of a conductor pattern member 35 arranged in a movable barrel, two sliding pieces 47, 49, and a variable power position specifying part. The conductor pattern member 35 is a single pattern consisting of a 1st pattern part 38 and a 2nd pattern part 39, and the 1st pattern part 38 has plural variable power halting position signal parts 42 for inputting one of binary signals to the 1st sliding piece 47 arranged thereon along the moving direction of the movable barrel. The 2nd pattern part 39 has plural variable power position identification signal parts 45 for inputting one of binary signals to the 2nd sliding piece 49 only for a different period at each variable power position respectively arranged along the moving direction of the movable barrel. The variable power position specifying part counts standard pulses generated synchronizing with the drive of a movable barrel driving motor during the period when one of the binary signals is being inputted to the 2nd sliding piece 49, and identifies the position of the movable barrel based on the count value.
