PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance engine brake force in a low speed range and to reduce a strength required for a valve system in a compressive pressure releasing type brake in an engine. SOLUTION: In a compressive pressure releasing type brake in an engine, which is composed of an exhaust brake valve interposed in an exhaust passage of the engine, and a valve system synchronized with revolution of the engine so as to communicate a cylinder with the exhaust passage, for closing an exhaust brake valve upon braking, and for opening an exhaust valve during strokes other than intake strokes, the exhaust valve is closed temporarily during an intake stroke upon braking.
