PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain a high-substitution-degree objective substance by heightening the utilization efficiency of an alkali in the alkalification reaction by dissolving cellulose by mixing with 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone and lithium chloride, adding an alkali to the solution, and etherifying the cellulose. SOLUTION: Examples of dissolution methods which can be adopted include one comprising immersing cellulose in water and replacing the water by 1,3- dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone and lithium chloride and one comprising immersing cellulose in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone and lithium chloride and heating the mixture at about 50 to 200 deg.C. The amount of the 1,3-dimethyl-2- imidazolidinone used is desirably such that the cellulose concentration is 0.1-15 wt.%, The amount of the lithium chloride used is desirably 5-20 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone. The amount of the alkali used is usually 10-1,000 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. cellulose.
