A ribbon style electrical connector (100) is provided having at least one variable resistance contact (108) such that an electrical resistance between the variable resistance contact (108) and a corresponding mating contact (116) of a second mating connector (110) varies from a relatively high resistance to a relatively low resistance as the first and second connectors (100, 110) transition from an unmated to a mated position. The ribbon style connector (100) includes a housing (102) having a first end and a second end, with a shroud (104) depending from the first end, the shroud (104) defining a contact chamber (105). A substrate (106) is mounted within the contact chamber (105) and communicates with the second end of the housing (102). A plurality of signal contacts are adhered to a surface of the substrate (106), with at least one of the signal contacts including a resistive portion (120) and a conductive portion (122). The resistive portion (120) and conductive portions (122) being arranged such that a mating contact (116) of the second connector (110) will engage the resistive portion (120) first and engagedly moves along the resistive portion (120) toward the conductive portion (122) as the ribbon style connector (100) and the second connector (110) are intermated. When the two connectors (100, 110) are fully mated, the mating contact (116) directly engages the conductive portion (122) of the resistive contact (108).
