摘要 <p>A first face of an optical device has a lens function of focusing a transmission light beam from a light source. A second face of the optical device total-reflects the focused light beam to one end face of an optical transmission medium which is a transmission destination. The light beam subjected to total reflection emerges from a coupling face. Since the light beam from the light source is thus directed to the optical transmission medium through the total reflection, no high reflectivity multilayer film nor polarized light beam splitter film are dispensed with, unlike conventional devices using a polarized light beam splitter, so that the film-forming cost and the cost for joining two prisms used to fabricate a polarized light beam splitter are reduced. Therefore, the manufacturing cost and size of the device can be decreased without lowering the transmission/reception performance.</p>
