A fiber grating formed in an optical component for optical communication and optical signal processing and a method for forming the same are disclosed. The coating (2) of a coated optical fiber (3) is partly removed, and then a resin film (7) having a thickness thin enough to exhibit an ultraviolet transmittance which does not obstruct the formation of a grating is formed over the surface of the exposed portion of the optical fiber (1). Thereafter ultraviolet radiation (ultraviolet coherent light) is applied from the surface side of the resin film (7) through a phase mask (9) so as to form a grating in which the refractive index of the core (4) of the exposed optical fiber (1) periodically varies in the optical axis. The resin film (7) is made of, for example, an organic material having a heat-resistance which is so high that it does not melt by the heat produced by ultraviolet radiation application, such as a polyimide resin or polyamide/imide resin. The thickness of the resin film (7) is 10 .mu.m or less, so that ultraviolet light can sufficiently pass through the film (7) and hence the focusability of coherent light is not degraded.
