High speed network switch for connecting networks

The switch has several ports (121-133, 171-183) that are configured to receive data blocks from one network, and divide the blocks into cells, each with an originating port field. A receiving FIFO (134,184) connected to the ports is configured to receive the cells from the ports. A bus interface (138,188) coupled to the receiving FIFO is configured to receive the cells from the FIFO and transmit them over the bus (150). An Independent claim is also included for a method of exchanging data via a network switch.
