The system comprises cash cards with memory chips (12) and cash card terminals for contacting the memory chips and altering the cash amount stored. The plate-shaped body (10) of the cash card has an aperture (14) in which a liquid crystal display (16) (LCD) is mounted. The LCD medium can be set into a stable transparent state by applying an electric field for a short period, and can be changed to a stable light scattering state at lines or points by temporarily heating with a laser beam. The terminal has a voltage source for generating the electric field, a laser and a controller. Independent claims are also included for a cash card and a cash card terminal.
