A procedure for improving the tipping safety of a car has the damping characteristic of adjustable vibration dampers adjusted according to a detected roll frequency. It is detected whether the roll frequency or spectral parts of it are to be found in the range of the eigen-frequency of the car and in this case, the damping is adjusted to be harder. A device to improve the tipping safety comprises: at least two vibration dampers (16) whose damping characteristics are all changeable; detection devices (12) to detect the roll frequency and to generate a corresponding signal; a control unit (14) which adjusts the damping characteristic by considering the roll frequency signal. By means of a determination unit it can be established whether the roll frequency or spectral parts of it lie in the range of the eigen-frequency of the car. The control unit is designed so that in this case, the damping is adjusted to be harder.
