The ink printer has a pump (14) delivering ink (6) from a replaceable reservoir tank (5) accessibly mounted in the printer frame (1,2) via a connecting line to a closed, externally accessible ventable ink tank (7) mounted on the printer frame. The ink level in the first static ink tank can be regulated (17), the pump can be switched on and off using level sensors (18a,18b) and the ink can be delivered via tubes (19,20) associated with nozzle heads (9,10) to a low capacity carriage tank (12,13) depending on the ink level in the first tank.
