An optical emergency indication system for motor vehicles has LEDs (22) associated with PDLC liquid crystal diffusors (24) for the most important indicator lamps. When one of these lamps is switched on the diffusor (24) is simultaneously energized and, for a predetermined time, the LED (22) emits a flash of light spread over a solid angle which is certain to intersect the driver's field of vision; when this time has elapsed, the light emitted by the lamp returns to its nominal value.
