To remove solid matter from a watery fiber suspension (S), gas bubbles (4) are introduced to collect the solids into a floating foam (5) for extraction. The gas (G) has at least a partial shrinkage component (2) which reduces the volume of the suspension (S). The gas (G) is a mixture composed of at least two different components to give shrinkage (2) and bubbling (3). The shrinkage component (2) is steam which condenses at least partially in the suspension (S). Or it is a gas at a significantly higher temp. than the suspension (S), and which reacts with the suspension to reduce its volume. The shrinkage component (2) can be taken from the air collected at the hood over the drying section of a papermaking machine. The bubbling component (3) is air. The volume ratio of at least two components can be set by the dimensions of the gas bubbles (4), to control the foaming effect. The unwanted solids are contained in the foam, for removal, while the usable fibers remain in the suspension (S). The foam flotation can also take fibers and solids from the suspension (S), to leave cleaned water.
|
