Mineral insulated electric cables are manufactured using materials and processes which increase the electrical strength of the insulation relative to that of such cables which are manufactured, or which have hitherto been proposed to be manufactured. The electrical strength of such cables depends predominantly on the electrical strength of the gas phase of the gas/mineral powder insulation matrix. The electrical strength of the gas phase is increased by (i) increasing the pressure of the gas, or (ii) causing the gas phase to consist of a gas of greater intrinsic electrical strength than nitrogen or (iii) by a combination of these two procedures. |
