Remedies for ulcerative colitis having a potent effect of repairing tissues damaged by ulcerative colitis without any fear of side effects as observed in steroids. These remedies include those containing as the active ingredient peony, in particular, a dried peony powder or Chinese herbal medicines containing peony, and those containing as the active ingredient a percolated dry extract of peony or percolated dry extracts of Chinese herbal medicines containing peony, in particular, percolated dry extracts of "kami-syoyosan", "toki-syakuyaku-san", "syakuyaku-kanzoto" or "keisi-bukuryogan".
