1306552 Moulding wheels MOTOR WHEEL CORP 17 Feb 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 7504/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division B7] A metal-and-plastics vehicle wheel comprises a metal wheel disc 14. and rim 12 for receiving a tyre, and a plastics ornamental overlay 16 moulded to at least part of the "outboard" surface of the wheel metal, the overlay being of a homogeneous plastics material, such as polyurethane of either cellular or non-cellular form, providing an outboard contour which may be different from that of the metal wheel portions. The overlay may have inset trim panels (56), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), of stainless or chrome plated steel, or simulated wood veneer secured to a metal backing-plate, or transparent or translucent vinyl with a vacuum metallized rear surface. The panels have retaining tabs (58) set in the overlay. The overlay is formed on the wheel in a mould 36, Fig. 2, from a high density self-skinning urethane elastomer with or without fillers. The overlay may be cast separately from the wheel and then adhered to the wheel. Mould 36 comprises a lower half 38 having a cavity 40 for receiving the overlay 16, and an upper half 42 for engaging the "inboard" surface of the wheel. Pins 44 engage the bolt holes in the disc 14. The overlay may be formed upon a coating of zinc phosphate, adhesive, or enamel primer. Various possible adhesives and overlay constituents are listed. The overlay may have a coat of urethane or aluminium paint. The disc 14 may have holes therein to allow injection moulding, or the elastomer may be metered into the mould while open. The trim panels (56) may be held in place in the mould by magnets (60), Fig. 5 (not shown). |
