A toilet tablet, superfatted with a free fatty acid, comprises an alkali metal soap and an alkali metal sulphate of a primary alcohol, wherein (1) 10-75% of the molecules of the alcohol have the formula in which n is an integer from 7 to 14, R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl and the total number of carbon atoms is 11 to 18, (ii) the remainder of the molecules of the alcohol are unbranched and of similar C number, (iii) the alkali metal is sodium or potassium and (iv) potassium ions are present in the tablet so that (A) potassium (expressed as potassium alkyl sulphate) content is 20-85% by wt. of the alkali metal alkyl sulphate (X) in tablets containing up to 30% of (X); (B) potassium (expressed as potassium alkyl sulphate) content is 6 to 25À5% by weight of the soap + (X) in tablets containing more than 30% of (X). The soap is preferably made from a mixture of tallow fat and coconut oil. It is preferred to neutralize the sulphuric half ester of the alcohol with a mixture of sodium and potassium hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates, such that the product of neutralization contains Na and K ions in the proportions required to produce when combined with the alkali metal soap, a toilet tablet having the desired potassium content. |
