A floodlamp comprises a housing 20 having a window 21 at one end, an arcuate reflector 23 facing the window, and a light source L, preferably a mercury vapour lamp, mounted between the window and the reflector, one end of the source being engaged with a socket 26 and the other end being supported by a holding device which includes a removable sleeve 52 adapted to engage a protuberance 27 on the source and a button 53 carried by a flexible arm 54 which can be used to support a source L<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 3A, not shown) of the type having a depression (28) in place of the protuberance 27. The sleeve and the button are both lined with heat insulating and cushioning material such as asbestos. The housing consists of two identical sections 20a releasably connected by bolts 20b and each of which has an opening 47 which is of sufficient size to allow the source L to pass and is closed by a cover 48 having a well 50 in which the socket 26 or holding device is disposed. The housing is divided into front and rear compartments by a flue 35 through which air can flow for cooling purposes, the ballast 36 and capacitor 37, which are located in the rear compartment, being further insulated from the heat generated by the source by means of a fibreglass mat 46 disposed behind the reflector 23. The reflector consists of a plurality of strips the ends of which are engaged in grooves (44, 45 Fig. 4, not shown) in the walls 24, 25 of the housing, several sets of grooves being provided so that the shape of the reflector may be changed. The housing is supported by a mast fitter 29 comprising a lower part 29a releasably secured to a mast 30 and an upper part 29b pivotally connected to the lower part and releasably secured to the bottom wall 25 of the housing by bolts 69. Sets of bolt holes are also provided on the top wall 24 and side wall 31 so that the housing can be mounted in an inverted position or on its side. |
