Foaming in aerobic fermentations, esp. in antibiotic production, is inhibited by addition of a polypropylene glycol (25-50% pref. 30-35%) together with a polymer or copolymer (2-30 units) of alkylene or alkylenoxy units, with opt. hydrophilic gps. (-COOH, -CONH2, -OH, -OAlkyl). The effect is synergistic, only ca. 0.1% of the liquid vol. being used. Examples of the polymer are: polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide and polyethylene glycol esters. The product is non-toxic, stable, cheap, and safe to handle.
|
