The catalyst may include mixed sulfide phases containing sulfides of groups VB and VIB elements to increase the acidity of the matrix and improve selectivity in middle distillates. The catalyst comprises an amorphous matrix of oxide-type, a group VB element, a beta zeolite, a promoter element (boron, phosphorus or silicon) and a group VIB or VIII element. In addition a catalyst is claimed comprising a beta zeolite, a mineral matrix, a mixed sulfide phase containing sulfur and metals of groups VB and VIB and optionally a group VIII metal, silicon, boron or phosphorus and a group VIIA element. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of the catalyst by: (a) drying and weighing of a precursor solid containing a matrix, a beta zeolite, and optionally the promoter element, group VIB or VIII elements and group VIIa element, the whole being formed; (b) calcining the dry solid at a minimum of 150 deg C; (c) impregnating the calcined solid with a solution containing a group VB element, preferably niobium; (d) leaving the moist solid in a moist atmosphere at 10-120 deg C; (e) drying the moist solid at 60-150 deg C; and (f) calcining the dried solid at a minimum of 150 deg C, preferably 250 deg C. The catalysts is sulfurized in a mixture of H2 / H2S or pure H2S at 150 - 800 deg C.
