The catapult for launching a small aircraft (2) carried by a carriage (4) includes a winch (5) coupled to a hydraulic motor-accumulator set (9). The winch is placed under an acceleration zone (ZA) of the ramp (3). A return pulley (14), over which a link (7) wound on the winch and attached to the carriage, is placed under a braking zone (ZF) of the ramp. An energy absorbing elastomer braking device (10) is provided on the braking zone.
