The actuator's main body (21), an aluminum casting fixed to the gearbox (10), includes a cylindrical guide (22,39) through which the gearbox input shaft passes coaxially. The piston (11), a plastic molding with stiffening webs (58), mounted on a steel support tube (46), bears (54) on the inner race (26,27) of the release bearing (18). The operation of the clutch pedal, or automatic equivalent, forces fluid through a pipe connection (16) into an annular chamber (13), driving the sealed (68) piston assembly along an annular passage (12) formed by an outer cylindrical extension (23) of the fixed body. The piston's reentrant outer skirt (59) has a sealing tip (60) riding on the extension (23), averting the need for sealing bellows. A self-centering washer (49) completes the piston release bearing assembly. The piston supports rides along the guide tube on a low-friction plastic cylinder (45), forming an effective seal. Piston travel is limited by a stop-ring (29) on the guide tube.
