FIELD: rocketry; starting solid- propellant rocket engines. SUBSTANCE: method includes successive operation of igniter squib, igniter squib, igniter and charge; at moment of operation of igniter, initial free volume of inner cavity of engine is increased. Engine has housing, solid-propellant charge, cover, igniter and igniter squib. Cover is movably secured in housing of combustion chamber by means of flexible member. At moment of ignition, cover moves up to the stop against load-bearing end face under action of pressure of gases, compressing flexible member. As a result, initial free volume of inner cavity of engine increases, thus excluding peak of pressure. EFFECT: enhanced reliability of start at retained strength of engine and reduced mass. 3 cl, 3 dwg
