Apparatus for successively welding pieces of preheated material e.g. billets, to form a continuous length or lengths comprises at least one flash-butt welding machine 5 and guide rails along which the machine is movable by means of a drive, at least one rail 13 being disposed above and at least one rail 7 being disposed below the machine and at least one of which rails supports the machine, the machine having two parts 17, 18 connected together by a pivot 19 whose axis is perpendicular to the line of movement of the workpieces, one part 17 carrying a device 20, 21 for clamping a length of material and the other part 18 carrying a device 25, 26 for clamping a succeeding piece of material to be welded. The upper conductive jaws 20, 25 are fixed respectively to parts 17, 18 and connected to the respective ends of secondary windings of two transformers 32, 33, the other ends of the secondaries being joined to connect the windings in series. The lower jaws 21, 26 are fixed to the cylinders of hydraulic rams whose pistons are secured to the parts 17, 18 respectively. A further hydraulic ram located at the bottom of the machine has its cylinder 35 fixed to part 17 and its piston 36 fixed by a flexible leaf-spring 37 to part 18. The upper jaws may be provided with removable inserts (29) (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), which, when in place, project from the clamped surface of the jaws. The machine moves in a tank of water such that with the lower jaws retracted they are at least partly submerged. The upper part of the machine may oe guided by two rails (12, 13) (Fig. 2, not shown) on which rollers fixed to the machine run. Four such machines may be mounted side by side. |
