PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain hydrogen gas generation and prevent performance degradation during storage in a button type alkaline battery, which uses a negative electrode action substance of low amalgamation or non-amalgamation and for which high capacity is to be realized by thinning its negative electrode container. SOLUTION: This button type alkaline battery is composed by receiving a negative electrode action substance and an alkaline electrolytic solution in a negative electrode container 4, the negative electrode container 4 is made of a material in which diffused layers are formed on layer interfaces by heat- treating a three-layer metal material of nickel, stainless steel and copper formed by means of a clad method, and the diffusion of iron element into the stainless steel can be stopped in the vicinity of the interfaces by setting the thickness of the copper layer to 3-30μm and the percentage content of nickel in the stainless steel that is the base material not more than 0.6%. As a result, the iron elements are not exposed to the layer surface, so that even if the thickness of the copper layer is reduced as above, hydrogen gas generation by the electrolytic solution can be prevented. Thereby, high capacity of the battery can be achieved without causing performance degradation.
