PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the necessary time related to focus detection and to make the accurate focus detection realizable in a multiplate electronic image pickup device and the like. SOLUTION: This detector is equipped with image pickup elements 15 and 20 photoelectrically converting a subject image formed by a photographing lens system 11 including a focusing lens performing focusing, an image pickup means (image pickup circuits 16 and 20, A/D conversion circuits 17 and 22 and an image compositing processing circuit 23) converting an electric signal from the image pickup element into an image signal, an AF optical device 13 disposed on the front of either image pickup element 15 so as to freely advance/retreat, dividing luminous flux forming the subject image into two and forming it into an image on the light receiving surface of the image pickup element 15, and a focusing position detection means (a segmenting circuit 18, an image deviation comparison circuit 19 and a system controller 27) comparing two image signals extracted by the image pickup element 15 corresponding to both luminous fluxes divided into two by the device 13 and detecting the focusing position of the subject image by the lens system 11, and an electronic image pickup device 1 to which the focus detector is applied, is constituted. |
