PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily perform and manage the file updating of each ATM exchange by defining a first OAM cell for checking the number of file versions at a station, transmitting the OAM cell on an ATM network and acquiring the number of file versions at the station of the transmission destination from its response. SOLUTION: The station at the file updating request source defines the OAM cell (FVC-OAM cell) for file version number identification for checking the number of file versions at the station on a VP/VC link to the OAM cell on the ATM network. Then, a version number check request is set to an attribute identifier and the location ID of the station at the file updating request source and the FVC-OAM cell (version number check request), to which the number of file versions is set, are transmitted to the station on the VP/VC link. The station of a file updating request on the VP/VC link sets the number of file versions and the location ID to the FVC-OAM cell (version number check response) and returns it to the station at the file updating request source.
