The process involves using an approximate model to assist rapid decoding. The process for decoding a quantified digital signal includes the stages of reading (E3) the quantification symbols (qi), and construction (E4) of an experimental distribution (Oi) of quantification symbols (qi). This is followed by approximation (E5) of the experimental distribution (Oi) by a continuous distribution model (F) passing through the experimental distribution values. There is subsequent calculation (E8) for at least one quantification cell (Ci) of a de-quantification vector (V(qi)) equal to the barycentre (Bj) of the quantification cell points weighted by the restricted continuous distribution values (F). The final stage comprises storage (E10) of the de-quantification vectors (V(qi)) associated respectively with the quantification symbols (qi) in order to achieve decoding (E11).
