The invention relates to polymerase chimeras which consist of amino acid fragments representing domains and which combine properties of naturally occurring polymerases which are advantageous with a view to a particular application. The invention surprisingly showed that the domains from the different enzymes are active in the chimera and present a cooperative behaviour. The invention also relates to a method for producing the chimeras provided for in the invention and to their use in the synthesis of nucleic acids, for example during polymerase chain reaction. The invention further relates to a kit which contains the polymerase chimeras provided for in the invention.
