A light absorbing thin film stack has a reflected light destructive interference and absorption surface layer combination (451) and a residual light absorbing light bottom layer. A light absorbing thin film stack has surface layers with different optical transmission properties from those of an immediately underlying layer, so that this surface layer combination subjects reflected light to destructive interference and absorption, the underlying layer having sufficient optical absorption capacity to absorb light which has passed through the surface layer combination (451). Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a liquid crystal light valve including the above light absorbent thin film stack; and (ii) a method of preventing penetration of light emitted from a pixel cell (410a, 410b) into an underlying silicon substrate (405) by providing the above light absorbent thin film stack. Preferred Features: The surface layer combination comprises a 40-300 Angstrom thick TiN, amorphous silicon or TiW layer and a 200-950 Angstrom thick silicon nitride or dioxide layer while the bottom layer is a 300-2000 Angstrom thick TiN, amorphous silicon or TiW layer.
