The hydraulic actuator has a housing (15), a motor (14) mounted on a first surface (15c) of the housing with a drive shaft normal to the surface and at least one pump (13,23) in the housing driven by the motor for suction and delivery of working fluid. Two storage devices (9,10) in the housing that store working fluid output by a hydraulically actuated element (300) and delivered to the pump have openings to a second housing surface (15b). Two dampers (11,12) in the housing that suppress pulsating flow of working fluid output from the pump have outputs to a third housing surface (15a). The third surface is opposite the second surface so that the motor drive shaft is between the second and third surfaces.
