An indicator (1) that has a pattern, such as a character, figure, symbol, word or short sentence, is provided on the top of a key of a board on which keys are arranged such as a keyboard, remote controller, telephone set, desk-top electronic calculator, or operating panel. The key has an intelligent communication function (7) having a non-volatile memory (A). A signal representing the change of status of the key detected by detectors (8, 9) is sent together with a signal representing the key number. An instruction from a master device (6) or a key signal from a specific key (5) is received to select one of the indication patterns stored in the non-volatile memory, and the selected pattern is indicated on the indicator (1). Although a communication bus (4) including a power supply is shown, wireless communication can also be used. This device enables indication conforming to the function always changing. Even with a small number of keys, key input is easy. The keyboard as a whole can also be used as a large indicator.
