An antimicrobial agent containing a silver-chloro complex salt, a chloride a nd an oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite or sodium chlorite, which exhibits an immediate or residual, bacterio- or fungi-cidal or antimicrobial effect against a wide variety of bacteria and fungi and enables instantaneou s deodorization; another antimicrobial agent containing a silver-chloro comple x salt, a chloride and a compound compatible with a solvent (such as water) in which the chloride is soluble, e.g., an alcohol or surfactant, which conveniently permits simple application at the concentration of storage, doe s not cause the formation of rust or the deposition of salts in service, and exhibits fast-acting properties and detergency; and another antimicrobial agent containing a silver-chloro complex salt and a chloride having at least either of the property of being able to exist in the form of a supersaturate d aqueous solution in the presence of a crystal nucleus at least at room temperature for 24 hours or longer and that of being decomposed when dissolv ed in water, for example, poly(aluminum chloride) or benzalkonium chloride.
