A plant includes a sorption zone (1), also a denitrification and phosphorus-elimination zone (2). Settled sewage is supplied to the sorption zone which is anaerobic, with a high organic concentration. The second zone is fed with nitrified waste water, and is anoxic. Preferred features: Biomass effecting purification is immobilized on freely floating substrates contacting waste water in reaction zones. These are recirculated continuously between the two zones. In the sorption zone, organic materials are absorbed, being carried into the denitrification zone to break down nitrates, increasing biological elimination of phosphate. Continuous alternation between anaerobic and anoxic environments, causes multiplication of denitrifying and polyphosphate-storing microorganisms on the substrates, responsible for effectiveness of the zones.
