Sensor process for a contact free approach sensor has an analysis circuit that checks the functioning of the sensor. The sensor has a microwave sensor based on the Doppler principle and an inductive sensor with the two sensors in a common housing. A microwave transmitter (3) linked to the analysis circuit (5) is used to control one or other of the sensors. The transmitter is mechanical of either the piezoelectric, magnetostrictive or similar type.
