Drying of a transport container useful for transporting nuclear reactor fuel rods to a reprocessing plant or an intermediate storage site

Drying of a transport container is carried out by reduced pressure application within an airtight sealed enclosure comprising a base plate and annular and/or cover segments. A transport container is dried by (a) placing the container vertically on a base plate having an edge sealing face on its top surface; (b) cleaning the exterior of the container; (c) positioning one or more enclosing annular and/or cover segments for airtight sealing of the container by means of segment seals which cooperate with the support plate seals; (d) applying a reduced pressure to the enclosure; and (e) removing the enclosure of annular segments. An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the above process.
